Ah, the “golden years!” – a time for older adults to slow down and enjoy a more relaxed pace of life. For some seniors, however, aging also comes with feelings of loneliness and sadness and a need for companionship. It’s why many decide to get a dog later in life in hopes of bringing back the joy they once had in their younger days.

Doing so is also shown to reduce stress, ease anxiety, and give a sense of belonging and purpose. Even more, dogs can play a crucial role in making seniors feel wanted and needed all over again.

So, if you or someone you know is searching for a dog to make a difference in the life of someone’s “golden years,” here are 8 Low-Maintenance Dog Breeds that are Perfect for Seniors.

1

Shih Tzu

A small, fluffy Shih Tzu dog with brown and white fur lies comfortably on a grey sofa, looking off to the side in a bright, modern living room with soft pillows in the background.
Happy-go-lucky and affectionate, this little companion thrives with gentle walks and cozy indoor living.

Talk about a “happy-go-lucky” dog! The Shih Tzu is considered one of the best dog breeds for older adults! Their temperament is sociable and friendly, and they adapt well to indoor living. Their energy level? Moderate.

They’ll likely enjoy going on walks, (which will help keep seniors active) but they don’t need a big amount of physical activity, so that’s good!

They have long coats, though, so you’ll need to stay on top of their grooming needs. Otherwise, these little guys could be the perfect senior pet!

2

Poodle

A freshly groomed grey Miniature Poodle stands proudly on a paved brick path, showing off a traditional show clip with a topknot and fluffy leg pom-poms against a green garden background.
Highly intelligent, poodles enjoy daily walks and will thrive with regular grooming.

Just call this breed “a smarty pants!” And that’s in the best way possible! Poodles of all sizes (toy, small miniature, or larger standard) are known to have above-average intelligence.

This means they are easily trainable, and that’s a big help for older adults. Poodles also have a sweet, gentle nature, and enjoy outdoor activity; basic daily walks are usually enough for most poodles.

One drawback? They should be professionally groomed every month or two. So, ideally, they’d be best for a senior who can drive and take them to get their coat cared for. Overall, the Poodle is a loyal and affectionate companion who learns fast and should adapt well to a senior’s way of life!

3

Cocker Spaniel

A fluffy, golden Cocker Spaniel dog sits happily with its tongue out on a white rug in a bedroom, next to its dog bed and rope toy with a large bed in the background.
Friendly, loyal, and eager to please, this affectionate companion fits comfortably into many homes.

Ah, the Cocker Spaniel! My family owned two Cocker Spaniels when I was a kid, and I had a neighbor who had one, too. As you might assume, this is a popular breed!

So, why so much for older adults? Well, they are people pleasers. So, they’re easy to train, and because of their size, they can live in smaller spaces and fit well into any household situation.

Cocker Spaniels are friendly, and great with kids, seniors, other dogs, and people, too. They’re also super loyal, so you’ll likely be the “love of their life!” Even more, they don’t require much grooming (even with their fabulous coats), and generally only need a daily brushing. Sounds like what could be a great match!

4

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

A happy Pembroke Welsh Corgi dog runs forward with its long tongue out across a green field dotted with small yellow flowers.
Playful, intelligent, and adaptable, this cheerful favorite brings plenty of personality to everyday life.

It’s no wonder the late Queen of England owned more than 30 Corgis and Dorgis during her 70-year reign! Corgis are a delightful and entertaining breed, which is why they’re considered one of the best dogs for seniors.

They do well in apartments or smaller homes and are easy to train. Corgis also enjoy exercising outdoors and tend to get along with others.

They have a double coat, which causes them to shed, but brushing them daily should help. Not to mention, if you choose a Corgi for a companion, you’d be an owner of a “royal breed,” and who wouldn’t want that, no matter your age?!

5

Pomeranian

A small, fluffy orange Pomeranian dog stands happily with an open mouth and panting tongue in thick green grass, against a softly blurred park background.
This fluffy favorite loves attention and plenty of quality time.

Call them energetic little companions! The Pomeranian is considered one of the best dog breeds for seniors. It’s also one of the world’s most popular toy breeds, too. They are smart, lively, curious, and affectionate – and they love attention!

I had a Pomeranian as a kid, and he loved belly scratches at night, even pawing at my hand when I stopped, as if to say, “Hey, keep doing that!” He’d lay at the foot of my bed and sleep so soundly.

One downside? Pomeranians tend to be loud, often described as “yappy” barkers. However, firm and gentle leadership can train them to keep this behavior at bay. If you’re an older adult who can give them lots of time and energy, they will return the favor by showing you plenty of love and affection.

6

Maltese

A small, fluffy white Maltese dog sits calmly on a person's lap in soft sunlight, while an older man with glasses reads a hardcover book in the blurred background.
Maltese are well known for their beautiful white, fluffy coats and even softer demeanor.

For seniors, a lap dog that is content with being petted all day could be a perfect match! The Maltese would be an excellent companion because of their sweet, calm demeanor and small size.

This breed also doesn’t mind spending quiet time at home, so if you’re looking for a furry companion to snuggle up to, the Maltese could be a great choice.

Regular grooming is necessary, but because of their small size, it’s manageable. My mother-in-law had a Maltese, and he was the sweetest, most gentle dog she ever had. Eager to please, they are devoted to their owners (which could be a bonus for older adults needing companionship). They also look like a snowy furball of joy!

7

Bichon Frise

A fluffy, white Bichon Frise dog stands on a stone pavement wearing a patterned blue and white harness with its tongue out against a blurred architectural pillar backdrop.
Bright, fluffy, and full of charm, this cheerful little companion loves gentle play and close company.

Cheerful, playful, and easy to manage, this breed could make an excellent retirement companion for any older adult.

The Bichon Frise is not only adorable, but they are minimal shedders and low maintenance, requiring little upkeep on the pet owner’s part. (A family member of mine had a Bichon Frise, and he was the perfect companion in a little apartment.)

With a spunky, friendly personality, they thrive on companionship and enjoy playtime with light activity. Another plus? This breed sheds less than others, making them a great option for those with allergies! That’s a BIG bonus for any senior dealing with allergy issues and one less thing to worry about!

8

Golden Retriever

A smiling senior man with gray hair kneels down to pet a happy Golden Retriever on a pine needle-covered floor in a pine forest.
Gentle, patient, and loyal, this beloved favorite brings warmth, joy, and an active lifestyle.

You might notice that most of the dogs on this list are of smaller size breeds. If you’re a senior looking for a larger dog, the Golden Retriever could be the perfect fit! Friendly and patient, they are one of the most loyal breeds with a gentle disposition.

They require daily exercise and more space than a smaller dog, but they can bring immense joy and life to your everyday routine. And doesn’t it make sense to have a “Golden” around during your “golden years?” We think so, too!
