Talk about a soulful gaze! At just a year old, Koda is a loving boy with a gentle nature who is ready to be your family’s next best friend. Right now, he’s staying with our friends at the Fields of Freedom Dog Rescue in Lancaster, Ky after finding himself on the euthanasia list at a shelter in Bell County.
Poor Koda was on the list simply because of his size. At 52 pounds, he was originally an “owner surrender” and came to the animal center with a group of five other dogs who were also on the list.
Before we get into all you need to know about Koda, let’s take a look at what we know about his breed and characteristics:
A Second Chance
Koda is a magnificent Mountain Cur mix whose striking appearance is matched only by his exceptional character. His soulful eyes seem to speak volumes about his gentle spirit, while his radiant smile instantly brightens any room. This handsome boy carries himself with a quiet dignity that belies his difficult past.
While he may have started his recent journey at a shelter on their Euthinasia list, thankfully, his life was spared. Now, he’s ready to spend the rest of his days happy, joyful, and in a loving home where he can play to his heart’s content!
Daily Life with Koda
Koda has adapted beautifully to home life. He’s fully house-trained and understands basic commands. His short coat requires minimal grooming—just occasional brushing to remove loose fur and keep his coat gleaming.
We are told Koda is good with most everyone but would do best with older kids (over 10) or dog-savvy younger ones due to his size.
He enjoys daily walks and moderate exercise, but isn’t hyperactive. After playtime, Koda is perfectly content to settle beside you as you read or watch TV, occasionally nudging your hand for pets.
Koda is also house-trained, his vaccinations are up to date, and he’s been neutered. Overall, he’s a happy guy who loves affection and is ready to be your family’s next loyal companion and best friend.
Koda’s Ideal Home Environment
Koda would thrive in a home that can provide:
- Regular attention and companionship
- Secure fencing for safe outdoor time
- Clear boundaries and loving guidance
- Appreciation for his protective nature
- Older children (10+) or dog-savvy younger ones who understand how to respect his space
He gets along well with other dogs and could be a wonderful companion for another canine friend with proper introduction.

An Update on Koda
For those of you following along, we have an update on sweet Koda! We decided to foster Mr. Koda while we attempted to find him a home. We had two great weeks of enjoying his company, while letting him get adjusted to playing with our dogs. Believe it or not, Koda had been at rescue for almost an entire year!
When we got Koda home, we decided to do a DNA test on him through Embark. His results came back with 50% Great Dane. This didn’t surprise us, but it surprised our rescue partners who were absolutely sure that he was a Mountain Cur.
Koda did very well with us at home, and fit right in with the rest of our pack. Luckily, after about two weeks, we were able to find him a home locally in Tennessee. His new family had been looking for a Great Dane mix, so they were the perfect match.
We are so excited that Koda was able to get adopted, and wish him nothing but luck with his new family in his new home!
